GP2X News: Psx4gp2x Updated (V0.1.2 Test 3)
"New release time:
psx4gp2x v0.1.2 Test 3:
Fixed a compatibility bug that made many games crash seemingly randomly.
More performance by adding a missing register in the reg caching of the dynarec.
Added load and save state support. No longer requires the "sstates" directory. Instead, saving a state will create a timestamped (too bad the GP2X resets its clock!) loadedfilename_timestamp.svs file in the same directory as the loaded game's filename. To load the save state, just goto File Options / Load State and choose a .svs file.
When rearranging save states, be sure to keep the timestamp character length the same (14 characters plus .svs for 18 total characters), and keep the file in the same directory as the rom.
So here's the download:

ZodTTD is back! :)
Here is the direct download link to psx4gp2x v0.1.2 Test 2:
http://www.zodttd.com/psx4gp2x/psx4gp2x_0_1_2_t2.zip
It's been a long time since a psx4gp2x version has been made, so the change list is very long.
I can tell you that the newly redesigned frameskip has been helping things a lot. Also the dynarec has been remade. Performance has increased quite a lot.
I just got done playing a game on my GP2X @ 266MHz. Buster Bros Collection, with sound on and interlace off, ran at 60FPS steady in-game, and the menus went way too fast, sometimes 120FPS. Frameskip works well on it's various settings and due to the way it must be designed, it doesnt skip certain frames, so things are kept smooth even on really high frameskips. Wipeout XL is amazing to see! :)
While there is still more to be desired, this is pretty exciting news. So my todo list contains:
- Further improve the dynarec.
- Tweak some default settings so compatibility is higher while maintaining performance. Thing includes the psx cycle setting.
- Enable BIOS emulation option in the menu.
- Enable the use of external menu systems. :)
- Check if save states are working. Both save states and memory card saves are implemented.

GP2X News: "Psx4gp2x V0.1.2 Test 1 - Playstation 1 Emulator For Gp2x"
[Posted by zodttd]
"Hi everyone!
I said I'd be back with a release of psx4gp2x when I learned more from trying other platforms, and here I am...with a new build of psx4gp2x!
Keep in mind this is a test build. Think of it as a rough beta.
- There's no pretty interface, as it's the standard old psx4gp2x GUI. I will soon move over to allowing it to interface with a menu system.
- There's no support for BIOS emulation (HLE) in this build, though it will be enabled in future releases. For now, you will need a PSX BIOS, either bios41a (I hear this is a great BIOS!) or scph1001.bin, but it MUST be named scph1001.bin (all lowercase) and be placed in the psx4gp2x directory where the psx4gp2x.gpe is.
- Save states may or may not work. Haven't tested them yet.
- Memory card in-game saves should work.
- Lots of stuff needs tweaking.
If you really want to see how things improved, play Buster Bros Collection from the previous release and compare it to this one. I was playing a very nice game with this latest build with sound enabled (sounded good!), no interlacing, and frameskip 1/2 and it was great.
Remember this is based on psx4iphone private beta v0.1.2 which is implementing my modifications to frameskip. Some games get graphical glitches or prefer a certain frameskip setting. If you see a flashing black screen glitch, just change the PSX Cycle and make it lower until it goes away.
You will also notice that even on really high frameskips, especially in 3D games, things dont go much faster and are still fairly smooth. This is due to the way these games are programmed. Not all frames can be skipped in the render process, so sometimes a really high frameskip in these games gives a slight performance boost but still keeps things smooth. Help me find out what settings should be default.
Here's a direct download link to psx4gp2x v0.1.2 beta/test build:
http://zodttd.com/psx4gp2x/psx4gp2x_0_1_2_t1.zip
Installation is the same as previous psx4gp2x releases. Fairly standard stuff, but since I dont have it all written out right now, I'll leave it to experienced users.
EDIT: I've set up a psx4gp2x section in my very active forums at www.zodttd.com. Though it seems its pretty empty currently.

So yeah, the game is in Italian, but it looks like it would be fun to play around with. This is the first original* "point and click" adventure game released for the F-200 (with touchscreen compatibility) -- a tip of the hat to Neurox on that point.
*as opposed to ScummVM which interprets commercially released "point and click" games from yesteryear.
Pandora: Close The Box...
ANYway... I'm sure the Pandora is a neat little system, and I have to give props to it's creators for taking the initiative, but it's not for me. Even if I had $400 to blow on anything I wanted, it would not be the Pandora. And I'm really tired of people getting so wrapped up in Pandora's hype that, in their minds, the GP2X is suddenly garbage -- it's part of the reason I started this blog - to devote total focus to the GP2X, and the F-200 unit in particular, for GP2X owners and fans. In fact, this is the last mention you'll see of the Pandora on this blog... I just had to vent a little.

- Minor changes to the User Guide.
v2.0
As mentioned last week I was planning to update one of my first GP2X games from when the GP2X was first released. It was originally a port of my GP32 game Yahtzee and due to the early development kit for the GP2X the port wasn't that great. So now the F-200 is out, touch screen is perfect for the game and although I do not own a F-200 I wanted an up to date version for myself and others to enjoy.

The game has the following changes:
- Brand new layout and design for the game. Menus and in game look totally different and are much nicer and easier to read.
- F-200 Touch Screen and USB Mouse are now fully supported.
- Media player from Squares is now used so you can play your favourite MP3, OGG and (I think) MOD format music.
- Added SFX for the dice roll. I didnt put much SFX as you should be bangin' out your tunes :)
- Added animation for the dice roll.
- High Score table added.
- PDF user guide.
- Minor bug fixes.
Please read the user guide on how to set up the media player, by default it searches the /audio/ subfolder on your SD Card. I hope you enjoy the new version, you can download it from the GP2X Archive here. Donations are appreciated so if you like the game don't forget!"

GP2XTouch: RUMOR MILL - "Blix2x"
After doing some beta testing for him on Squaresliding, Alex. was nice enough to allow me to test this game as well. Blix2x is a port of Blix. The object of the game is to move the three rows to align columns of the same color.
From Alex.'s readme:
"Blix2x is a remake of Nick Kouvaris's flash game Blix. The goal is to form columns of same-coloured tiles by scrolling the three rows. Each scroll costs 2 moves, and each cleared column wins you 1 move. The game ends when you run out of moves."
This game is simple yet challenging, and I can tell it's gonna be addictive!

GP2X News: "Uae4allgp2x 0.8.0 Beta By Noldor"
"submitted by noldor73 @ (10:03) 17 Dec 2007
This is a new (I think "unofficial") version for the Uae4allgp2x.
New 0.8.0 beta version based on 0.7.2a sources (Notaz release)
Changes/Bug fixes/Updates
- no more problems with long name file and no limit for number of files in the rom folder
- changed browse system file for the roms dir: now it's quick with plenty of rom files too. Besides Up/Down (keeping pushed to move on), there are Left/RIght to jump 16 files and L/R shoulder to jump 32 files
- improved user GUI code (W.I.P.) and reduced menu font (thanks to Eraso)
- improved mouse speed
- improved user GUI navigation (buttons repeat)
- added "Save General configuration" and "Save configuration for current game"
- added "Save Script for current game": it makes a script file to launch a specific game directly (using GMenu2X or default GP2X menu). If it used during emulation (having enabled it in the "More Options" menu), it makes automatically an icon taking a screenshot from the current game (32x32 px)
- added Eject option for all drives
- added X button to go back to the main menu (such as START/HOME)
- added everything new option for the command line
- now emulator remembers last selected device input (mouse, joystick, or keyboard). For more comfort, default device is mouse.
- default games navigation folder is now "roms"
- compiled with "profiling" option (thanks to notaz: http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?showt...ling&st=15)
- added new menu "More Options" with the following settings:
- Video Mode (moved from main menu): to choose between PAL and NTSC video mode (it needs to reset the emulation)
- Autosave (moved from main menu): it allows in-game saves
- Status ln (moved from main mnu): shows fps and drives status
- Memory Chip Size: it's possible to choose between 512KB and 1MB RAM chip (it needs to reset the emulation)
- Number of drives: it's possible to choose from 1 up to 4 drives. It needs to reset emulation to take effect. IMPORTANT! To insert adf disks into each drive (in Filemanager section), the buttons are: B for DF0:, Y for DF1:, A for DF2:, X for DF3:
- Use Autofire: helpful in some shooter. If it's enabled, you can switch on/off during emulation with Y or stick click
- Enable Screenshot: when enabled, it's possibile take a screenshot with Y (it works only if joystick device is selected). Images are saved with progressive name (shot0.png, shot1.png, etc.) in "screenshots" folder (png format)
- Enable scripts: when enabled, you can make a script file during emulation pushing Y (it works only if joystick device is selected)
- Skip intro: when enabled, skip the uae4all splash screen
- Kickstart: you can choose between 1.3, 2.0 and 3.1 kickstart version. To take effect it needs to reset the emulation. Moreover, the kickstart roms must be put into "kickstarts" dir and called "kick13.rom", "kick20.rom", "kick31.rom". If there aren't during the uae boot, the emulator will search "kick.rom" in the main folder
- Enable HW scaling: it's useful to be visibile the whole screen for some games such as Project X, T-Racer, All Terrain Racing, Tearaway Thomas, GemX, Benefactor, etc.
- Joystick config: besides the standard controls, it's possibile to use X for UP direction and B to fire (and viceversa)
It is in beta state but seems stable
I need feedback to debug it (I'm a sort of C newbie

GP2XTouchTV #1
Here's a translation of the video's description (It was in Spanish, and I used Babelfish... yeah, I know it's crappy, but I'm sure you'll get the gist of it):
"Trying to take advantage of the tactile characteristics the GP2X F200 to simulate the mouse in a PC for the games of firings in first person (FPS in English) being created a "hot zone" equivalent to the screen to indicate to the game towards where there is to watch. In this video we will see as the comfortable thing works and (or discomfort) that can be."
GP2XTouch: RUMOR MILL - "Squaresliding": New Info
The game takes place on a numbered grid. You can move up, down, left, or diagonally by choosing a number adjacent to your cursor. Whatever number you choose is how many spaces your cursor will move (i.e., if you choose a number 3 spot to your left, your cursor will slide 3 spaces to the left). There are also helpful items scattered across the grid, but you have to plan your moves carefully, because you don't want to accidentally slide into a trap or the side of the grid - doing so will score you a fat "game over". You must also be careful not to box yourself in - every time you pass through a numbered box, it turns blue. The longer you play, the longer the trail of blue boxes becomes. If you happen to move/slide into contact with the trail, your game will end.
I don't know when Squaresliding will be released for download, but the game seems pretty complete. So, it's just a matter of time before this awesome little touchscreen game will be available to GP2X users.

Version 1.2 for F200 and F100 with D-Pad Mod
The GP2X-F100 has 8 direction switches and combinations of them (i.e.
16 combinations). It has a switch for each of LEFT,UP-LEFT, UP,
UP-RIGHT, RIGHT, DOWN-RIGHT, DOWN, DOWN-LEFT. However the dpad mods
(and GP2X-F200) only have LEFT,RIGHT,UP,DOWN. So they send
LEFT+UP instead of UPLEFT etc...
I did some fixes for F100 dpad mods. It works also with the new F200 (tested by Beetle)."

The guys at Psilocybin Development are currently looking for a level designer for their puzzle game "Poussin". In total there should be 80 levels, with increasing difficulty and increasing use of objects.
If you are interested, if you have lots of time and if you are sure you can make 80 challenging levels, please get in touch with the development team - mail to dj_x63 (at) hotmail.com, which can also be used as direct MSN contact.
The game is supposed to be ported to plenty of systems such as the GP2x, Dreamcast, GP32, Pocket PC, etc... so your hard work will reach a larger audience. http://www.planetkedo.de/projects.php?id=poussin"

GP2X News: "Picodrive And Gpfce Updated"
"submitted by notaz @ (00:15) 15 Dec 2007
I've recently ported PicoDrive to Gizmondo and PSP, and fixed some bugs and added features in the process. So this is an update to the latest codebase.
Those who still play SegaCD games can now compress their ISOs to CSOs to save SD space (CSO is ISO compressor format widely used in PSP scene). Other than that it's just some minor tweaks, like Snatcher no longer requiring "accurate timing", etc.
Changelog:
- Added .cso ISO format support. Useful for non-FMV games.
- It is now possile to force a region after the ROM is loaded.
- Fixed a sram bug in memhandlers (fixes Shining in the Darkness saves).
- Added additional low volume levels for my late-night gaming sessions (in stereo mode only).
- Added "fast forward" action in key config. Not recommended to use for Sega CD, may case problems there.
- Some minor generic optimizations.
- Patched some code which was crashing under PSP, but was working in GP2X/Giz (although it should have crashed there too).
- Readme updated.
- Some other small tweaks I forgot about.
source code
Gpfce finally fixes the long standing bug in SMB3 involving missing ground (I hope). But I have not added complete open bus emulation (open bus emulation inaccuracies were the cause of the problem), because most other games don't seem to require it. It would be nice is somebody played SMB3 from start to completion without using warps and reported back.
Complete changelog:
- Improved open bus emulation, fixes missing ground in some SMB3 levels.
- Improved auto frameskip behavior in cases when emu is not fast enough to maintain 50/60 fps.
- Fixed a bug which prevented some key combo configurations from working.
- Some other minor changes.

GP2XTouch: RUMOR MILL - Beta Testing For "Squaresliding"
This is the first installment of GP2XTouch: RUMOR MILL. What's RUMOR MILL, you ask? It's stuff that can't exactly be classified as "news", but still worth mentioning - things that are whispered through the grapevine, but not confirmed. Or (as in the case of this particular post), information about programs being beta tested (but not yet officially announced or released). That said, here we go:
Beta testing is being conducted for a new touchscreen compatible game called "Squaresliding". Squaresliding's creator, GP32X member Alex. says:
"Squaresliding is heavily inspired by the Spy flash game..." (A screenshot from Squaresliding can be seen above.)

Welcome to GP2XTouch!
OK, it would be easy to assume that by reading this you already know what the GP2X is (and you probably own one as well), but on the off chance that you landed here by accident, I'll give you a brief rundown and a list of links so you can find out more. The GP2X is a Korean handheld system created by Gamepark Holdings. Even though it is manufactured in Korea, it's marketed around the world, mainly through dedicated online retailers. The GP2X is essentially a "personal media player", allowing you to play videos, music and view ebooks (and with a 3.5" [320x240] screen that displays 65,000+ colors, it's quite pleasing to the eye). But the feature that sets it apart from other PMP's out there is it's Linux-based open source architecture which allows for easy customization and programming -- particularly when it comes to gaming: emulation, homebrew games (both original and ported), and much more. The GP2X was originally released in November, 2005 (as the F-100), as a successor to the GP32, another game-friendly media player created by Gamepark (Gamepark Holdings split from that company before releasing the GP2X). Almost two years later (at the start of last month), the F-200 was released, part update and part makeover for the system. Changes included: A new white shell, replacing the original black that the F-100 sported; a D-Pad instead of the F-100's mini joystick; and the most interesting new update - the touchscreen. All this is just a simplified description. There's a lot that can be said for the GP2X and what it can do. Here's a list of sites where you can find out more:
GAMEPARK HOLDINGS' OFFICIAL GP2X SITE
WIKIPEDIA ENTRY: GP2X
GP32X: THE MAIN SITE FOR THE GP2X COMMUNITY
THE GP2X WIKI
THE GP2X FILE ARCHIVE
DCEMU'S GP2X NEWS SITE
Well, there ya go! In the next few days I'm going to start posting GP2X news (new programs that are released to the community - particularly any touchscreen stuff :-) ), create an ongoing, updated list of all touchscreen compatible programs for the F-200, and generally share my thoughts and experiences regarding the GP2X unit. Again, welcome!
